567 Slots: Did the Rule Change or Was the Result Cropped?
567 Slots screen comparison: reconstruct one fictional result across wide and narrow views, keeping record identity separate from visibility and layout.
On a wide screen, a result shows three detail rows and a total. On a phone, only the total and first row are visible. A reader says, “The phone version must calculate differently.” That conclusion goes beyond the observation. For a 567 Slots screen-reading exercise, we compare two views of one invented result record. The first question is whether the same information is visible, not whether the rules changed. A missing field on screen may require investigation before any explanation is chosen.

One record, two views
Our fictional record is labelled R208, settled at 14:10 IST, with detail rows A = 2 lesson marks, B = 3 and C = 5. The total is ten marks. The wide view displays all rows together. The narrow image shows R208, the same time, row A and total ten, while the middle portion is cropped. We use abstract marks to study visibility. This is not an actual result from a product or a claim about its display features.
First match the record identifier and time. If those differ, we may be comparing two different results rather than two layouts of the same result. In our example they agree. Next record what each view actually shows. “B and C are not visible in this image” is an observation. “B and C were not counted” is a calculation claim. The second cannot be inferred from the first merely because the crop leaves those rows out.
The arithmetic supplies a useful consistency check: 2 + 3 + 5 = 10. The narrow image's visible total agrees with the full teaching record, while its visible row A alone does not explain the total. That mismatch between visible detail and total is a reason to seek the missing detail, not a reason to replace ten with two. A cropped explanation can be incomplete even when the displayed total remains unchanged and correctly reflects the underlying record.
Layout has several possible effects
Web layouts can respond to viewport size; MDN describes responsive design and media queries used to change layouts. A narrow view may therefore place information differently. But a particular image could also be an ordinary crop or show only part of a scrollable page. Our example explicitly uses cropping. Do not choose among these explanations for a real page without observing it. General knowledge about responsive design supplies possibilities, not proof of what happened in a specific screenshot.
For the paper exercise, restore the hidden middle and find B and C in the complete record. The calculation is now explainable in both views. If the original narrow source instead genuinely omitted those fields, the correct record would say “details unavailable in this view”, not invent values. That distinction protects the method: reconstruction means collecting available evidence of the same record, rather than filling blanks from an unrelated example because its total happens to look familiar.

When more than one image is needed, preserve enough shared context to connect them. A top image showing R208 and row A, followed by an overlapping lower image showing A, B, C and the total, makes the relationship visible in our exercise. A detached picture of C = 5 would be weaker because another reader could not tell which result it belongs to. The aim is a continuous account of one record, not the largest possible number of screenshots.
Compare fields before conclusions
We would annotate the two views with a compact field comparison: identifier same; settled time same; total same; B and C absent from the crop, present in the complete view. This is already a meaningful finding. It supports “visibility differs” for the teaching example. To support “rule differs”, the reader would need evidence such as a different applicable rule statement, not just a narrower screen. The proposed explanation should match the type of difference actually observed.
A 567 Slots learner can test that distinction by changing one field in a new paper case. If the narrow image says total eleven instead of ten while keeping R208, the discrepancy is now numerical, not merely a missing detail row. Our original crop explanation would no longer settle it. We would need the complete record and context before deciding why. A method is useful when it signals the limits of its conclusion instead of forcing every new mismatch into the first explanation.
The 567 Slots example ends with the original record restored: A two, B three, C five, total ten. Both views refer to R208 at 14:10 IST, and the crop explains why the narrow image alone was incomplete. Ask the learner which observation changed after restoration. The hidden rows became visible; the rule and total did not change in this exercise. That answer keeps screen space, record identity and calculation separate, allowing a careful explanation of a visually confusing result.
